Tarrant County Historical Commission

Tarrant County Historical Commission

A people who take no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors will never achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by remote descendants.                                                         --Macaulay

The story of Tarrant County is the story of the taming of the West; of battles with Native Americans and cattle drives, of gunfights and gushers, as well as of plantations and packing plants.  From the coming of the pioneer, to the coming of the railroad, to the coming of high-tech assembly lines—it all happened here.

It is the mission of the Tarrant County Historical Commission to ensure that the story is saved and savored for generations to come.

ABOUT US

County historical commissions are authorized by the Texas Legislature for the purpose of “initiating and conducting programs for the preservation of the historical heritage of the county.”  Appointed by the Commissioners Court for 2-year terms, historical commissioners operate under their own by-laws but in close association with the Texas Historical Commission in Austin.

The Tarrant County Historical Commission meets regularly six times a year, but the work of its members is continuous.

PROGRAMS

The Commission is involved in many historic preservation efforts that include assistance with archaeological studies and environmental impact assessments and the promotion of historic appreciation throughout the county.  It also provides programs to schools and service organizations in the area through its Speakers Bureau.  The work of the commission is a continuous survey; and ongoing effort to recognize, publicize and preserve the colorful history of the county.
